Cum on feel the noize

When a man declares Dudley the home of rock and roll it deserves to be reported.
When that man says it in such a nonchalent way, almost an aside, and without the razzamatazz of a performer playing to his crowd you have to wonder if he meant it.
And when that man is Captain Sensible - vetern punk rocker, political leader, and performer of show tunes - it has to be taken seriously.
The Damned were awesome at JBs last night. Old songs played faster than ever, a quick wit, and an easy inclusive manner.
A musician friend thought the mix was dodgy. But The Damned aren't for musicians, they are for people who like to jump up and down and throw things.
Just like the Eric Hollies stand at Edgbaston - where I spent yesterday enthralled by an extraordinary test match.
Poor Eric - a gentleman cricketer who's name is now associated from Brisbane to Bangalore with drunken rowdyness.
I'm there again today. And I can't wait.
Then tonight Take the Fifth, the Clash tribute band who have played with Mick Jones, perform at the Roadhouse in Stirchley.
Is this the greatest cutural weekend in the history of the West Midlands?

Much as I 'ate to be old curmudgeon [ahem], it's not a patch on the old JBs...Tuesday and Friday nights of my teens spent rolling in the filth.

Isn't it the same building, by the zoo?

No, no, noooooo...it moved to the building by the zoo years ago. But the original building was up the top end of town, much much smaller, with a very low ceiling, a sticky floor and black walls covered in old billboard posters. Fucking legendary place, which had the actual real bands playing (usually before they signed) rather than reformations and tributes. And to top it all, the doorstop chip butties were unbeatable. I have such fond memories of forgetting whole nights there...

I saw Furniture there!
